Hot water stopped working? What to check first
A few safe checks can save you a call, or tell us what to bring:
Electric: check the hot water circuit breaker or safety switch at your switchboard. On off-peak power, the tank only heats at set times, so a busy day can empty it
Gas storage: check that the gas is on at the meter and that your other gas appliances work. Some units show a pilot light through a small window
Continuous flow: look for an error code on the controller, and try a hot tap turned fully on, because some units stop at very low flows
Every type: never remove covers or open the burner or electrical compartment. If you smell gas, turn off the gas at the meter, open doors and windows, and call

LEAKING HOT WATER SYSTEM
My hot water system is leaking: what to do first
Turn off the cold water at the isolation valve on the pipe going into the system
Turn off the power at the switchboard (electric and heat pump) or the gas at the unit
Keep clear of hot water and do not lift the relief valve lever
Catch or move what you can, and take photos for insurance

A small drip from the relief valve drain pipe while the system heats can be normal. A steady flow from that pipe, or water from the tank itself, is not: a leaking tank cannot be repaired and needs replacing.

REPAIR OR REPLACE?
When a repair is the right call
A repair is the right call when one part has failed and the tank is sound. Replacement is the right call when the tank leaks, or when the system is near the end of its life and the repair is costly.
Most hot water systems last about 8 to 10 years (Solar Victoria). A replacement must include a tempering valve or another approved device under NSW rules, which we include in the price. Hot water replacement.
THE RULES IN NSW
Temperature rules every installation must meet
Storage hot water must be heated to at least 60°C at least once every 7 days, to stop bacteria such as Legionella growing (YourHome).
Water at showers, baths, basins and bidets must be no hotter than 50°C. In NSW a tempering valve or another approved device is required on every new installation and every replacement, including a like-for-like swap (Building Commission NSW). That is why a proper replacement quote includes one, and why faulty tempering valves are among the most common hot water faults in our job records.
